From Family Man to Finish Line: How IV Hydration Helped Antonio “Tony” Hernandez Power Through IRONMAN 70.3 La Quinta

Training for an IRONMAN 70.3 is demanding on its own. Doing it while running a business and raising a family takes another level of commitment.

Antonio “Tony” Hernandez is a contractor who has been in business for over 12 years and a proud father of five daughters—Axl, Zeppelin, Ozzy, Halen, and Aero. His fitness journey didn’t start with race medals or finish lines; it started with a desire to feel better and show up stronger for his family.

“I was always tired. I couldn’t keep up with my kids. Even going up and down the stairs took a toll on me. Putting on my work boots was a challenge.”

That turning point led Tony to prioritize his health. When one of his closest friends challenged him to compete in an IRONMAN 70.3, he accepted without hesitation—and committed to transforming his lifestyle along the way.

Training for a Triathlon While Managing Real Life

Tony’s training schedule was intense and disciplined, consisting of six days per week, averaging 2–3 hours per session. His routine alternated between swim and strength training one day, followed by bike and run workouts the next.

Balancing high-volume endurance training while running a business and being present for his family was one of the biggest challenges he faced. With limited recovery time and high physical demands, Tony knew that hydration and nutrient support would play a critical role in his success.

Why Hydration Matters in Endurance Racing

During long-distance endurance events like an IRONMAN 70.3, athletes lose significant amounts of fluids and electrolytes through sweat. Even mild dehydration can lead to:

  • Muscle cramping

  • Early fatigue

  • Decreased endurance and power output

  • Slower recovery

  • Mental fog and reduced focus

Oral hydration alone isn’t always enough—especially when the body is under extreme stress or has difficulty absorbing nutrients efficiently during intense training.

This is where IV hydration becomes a powerful tool. By delivering fluids, electrolytes, and key nutrients directly into the bloodstream, IV therapy allows for:

  • Faster and more complete hydration

  • Improved electrolyte balance

  • Reduced risk of cramping

  • Enhanced endurance and stamina

  • Better post-race recovery

Tony’s Experience With the Recovery & Performance IV

Having struggled with hydration issues in previous races, Tony decided to take a more proactive approach to race preparation.

“I chose Altitude Wellness IV for my pre-race hydration because in past races I lacked proper hydration and supplementation. I trusted Altitude to get me through the race.”

A few days before race day, Tony received our Recovery & Performance IV, a blend designed to support hydration, muscle function, endurance, and recovery during periods of high physical demand.

Interestingly, the benefits weren’t immediately obvious.

“Right after the IV, I didn’t feel a significant difference because I was already following a hydration regimen.”

But the real impact came on race day.

Race Day Results: When the IV Made the Difference

Tony noticed a clear change in how his body performed under pressure.

“Normally during a race, I would intake 3–4 bottles of hydration and supplements. This time, I only took in about 1.5 bottles—and still felt significantly more hydrated.”

Midway through the bike leg, the difference became undeniable.

“Usually I cramp around miles 50–52. This race, I didn’t cramp at all.”

Despite training less than he typically would for an event of this magnitude, Tony set a personal record and crossed the finish line feeling strong and accomplished.

“I felt good after the race, which was huge for me.”

Making IV Hydration Part of the Training Plan

For Tony, IV hydration is no longer a one-time experiment—it’s part of his ongoing training strategy.

“I definitely want to make IVs a part of my training on a monthly basis. I highly recommend it.”

His experience highlights how strategic hydration and nutrient support can help athletes perform at a high level—even when balancing demanding careers and family life.
